The Acting Journey of Robert Carlyle

August 27th, 2010

A new article about Robert with some great quotes!

GateWorld sat down with Robert Carlyle — Stargate Universe‘s Dr. Nicholas Rush — at the 2010 Comic-Con International Convention in San Diego last month to discuss a number of topics, including Carlyle’s acting roots.

“I would say I was probably 20 before there was any notion of acting in my life,” Carlyle said. “I had enjoyed going to the movies as a kid. My father loved movies, you know. I could see any film as long as it was a western. So, I loved all of that.”

Carlyle began his journey by joining a local theater company. “It was more of a community center,” he told us. “Community drama. It had to do with discovering yourself, I suppose, and devised pieces, and improvised sessions and stuff like that. It really opened me up as person, first off, before an actor. I was very shy. I wan an incredibly, painfully shy boy, and at that time I would go red, even at 20, I would literally go red if somebody spoke to me. So, drama was vital for me, even just in life as a person, never mind going into it as professional actor.

‘Castlevania: Lords of Shadow’ release date

August 20th, 2010

A release date for ‘Castlevania: Lords of Shadow‘ has been set – October 5!

The fall is typically the most competitive time of year for the game industry, and it’s almost inevitable that several big games will go head-to-head on the same dates.

Today, Konami announced the finalized launch date for the hotly anticipated Castlevania: Lords of Shadow; it’ll be available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 5. Developed by Mercury Steam with the help of Kojima Productions, the latest iteration in this long-running series “introduces a fresh and radical re-imagining” of the series. You will play as Gabriel Belmont (voiced by Robert Carlyle), a member of the legendary vampire-hunting Belmont clan, and you must track down the Lords of Shadow to unite the pieces of a relic called “The God Mask.” If you can manage this, you will “purify the world” and have the power to bring the dead back to life. Featuring over 50 stages, over 45 different enemies, 40 possible combo attacks, and mammoth bosses, this one ought to be a blast. You’ll also be tested in the platforming and puzzle-solving categories as well. The catch? It has to compete with Ninja Theory’s Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, which releases on the very same day. Which one will you spring for? …how’s about both?

We definitely want to play both. But if you really only plan to nab one, we’ll be sure to let you know which is the better buy, in our opinion.

‘Dead Fish’ UK release and trailer

August 8th, 2010

Got an email about Dead Fish getting released on DVD in the UK on August 23, 2010. So if you havent bought your copy yet or seen the movie be sure to do so. I can recommend it – both Robert and Gary Oldman are doing their parts great!

Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight, Harry Potter, The Book of Eli) is at his dark and brutal best in the action-packed and sharply written Brit-Flick DEAD FISH, released to buy on DVD and as a combination DVD/Blu-ray boxset on 23 August 2010 by Boulevard Entertainment.

Accompanying Oldman on this hilarious and thrilling rollercoaster ride of gangster life gone wrong is a legendary line up including Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, The Full Monty, The Beach), Jimi Mistry (The Guru, 2012, Blood Diamond), Terence Stamp (Wanted, Yes Man, Get Smart) and Billy Zane (Titanic).

‘Fused Film’ video interview!

August 3rd, 2010

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and sitting down with legendary screen actor Robert Carlyle at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, and man was it a treat. As many of you know, I try to get informal and real with anyone I get to talk to on this site, because of our mission to create a window into these talented entertainers’ lives.

Robert was gracious enough not only to set us up for Season 2 of SGU and what to expect with his character, Dr. Nicolas Rush, but also how he approaches characters in acting, the techniques he implores, and finally what he does when he is not acting and working. One of the most interesting topics he discusses is one of the most emotional moments he has had in acting.

‘SGU’ – “Rush and Young headed for new revelations”

August 3rd, 2010

This article might contain spoilers so don’t read it if you don’t want to know some things ;)

GateWorld sat down with actor Robert Carlyle in San Diego last month at the 2010 Comic-Con International Convention to discuss the future of Stargate Universe and what changes fans can expect in Season Two of the hit show.

“Rush is still at it in the second season,” Carlyle said, “but even more so this time. When we join the second season, we discover instantly — in the first two or three scenes in fact — that Rush has discovered the bridge of the ship. Not only has he discovered the bridge, but he knows how to fly the thing. He’s steering it around. [The others] don’t know that. He hasn’t told anyone this.

“He’s under pressure, because the countdown clock when they stop the ship is not activating. The ship is stopping, the clock is not activating, and there are no planets in sight. Rush keeps leaving the room at these points.”

‘Stargate’ Season 2 trailer

July 29th, 2010

A tease for us looking forward to the new season!

Robert Carlyle Takes on Sci-Fi and Season Two of ‘SGU’

July 29th, 2010

New article about SGU and with some quotes with Robert himself!

On SGU Stargate Universe, actor Robert Carlyle plays Nicholas Rush, a Machiavellian-type character who isn’t a quite hero, but isn’t really the villain either. Not necessarily what you would expect to find from an actor who first garnered international attention playing a down on his luck steel worker in The Full Monty. At this year’s Comic-Con, Carlyle discussed his affection for the role of Rush and why he was drawn to it and the franchise as a whole.

“I’ve never played science fiction before. It wasn’t something I was looking for, so when I spoke to (creators) Robert Cooper and Brad Wright about it, the first thing we discussed was was this guy doesn’t want to come back. My God, let me play that character! That’s a great place for an actor to be in. What’s going on in there? And it hasn’t disappointed me so far.

Movies We Love: ‘Ravenous’

July 27th, 2010

Just a fun and intersting article about one of my favorite films with Robert, Ravenous. Enjoy the reading!

“I said no food. I didn’t say there was nothing to eat.”

Captain John Boyd (Guy Pearce) is a coward. After inadvertently (and indirectly based upon his cowardice) claiming an opposing stronghold during the Mexican-American War, he is relocated for his actions to an outpost in Sierra Nevadas. There, he finds himself second in command of a rag-tag group of eccentric, fellow soldiers. Things take a turn for the eerie when a stranger (Robert Carlyle), half-famished and near death, arrives at their door. The stranger tells them of a lost wagon train he was a part of, and the unspeakable horrors the group resorted to in order to survive. The soldiers take it as their duty to seek out the lost wagon train but not before their Native American guide explains to them the power of the Wendigo. It is a myth that whoever partakes in the flesh of man will gain that person’s strengths and could very well become consumed with this cannibalistic act. Horror and yes, a little bit of comedy ensue.

Comic-Con photos and videos

July 27th, 2010

Comic-Con has been and now you can view some photos here.

Robert Carlyle (The Tournament) was only slightly more forthcoming with upcoming information regarding the show and said that in the first season of SGU, the crew didn’t really know what they were doing up there but that everything will be revealed in season 2 regarding their purpose on the ship Destiny. He also said that the name of the ship has a lot to do with the story arc of this season and will lead up to a great season 2 ender. He wouldn’t go into details but promised that fans of the show would very much enjoy season 2 because relationships are explored a little more deeply between several of the ships crew, including Eli and Chloe.

Season 2 of Stargate Universe starts September 28th, 2010 on the SyFy channel.
