1961 - Born in Maryhill, Glasgow. Followed his dad into painting and decorating.
1976 - Began acting at age 15 (date approximate.)
1982 - Age 21, got some book tokens for a birthday presant and picked up Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. We are forever thankful for this, as this was the kick-starter for going along to the Amateur Dram Centre and Glasgow Arts Centre, then joining the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
1989 - Film debut, Silent Scream.
1990 - Appeared as a political candidate in the British TV production Taggart.
1990 - First starring role, Ken Loach s Riff-Raff.
1991 - Helped form ‘Rain Dog Theatre Company’, a theatre group that takes plays to local communities.
1993 - First collaboration with director Antonia Bird the BBC-2 TV-movie Safe.
1994 - Co-starred in Bird s controversial film Priest.
1995 - Starred in popular Scottish TV series Hamish Macbeth.
1995 - Played a man stricken with multiple sclerosis in the TV drama Go Now; released theatrically in 1998.
1995 - US TV debut as a villain in Cracker: To Be a Somebody.
1996 - Reteamed with Ken Loach for Carla’s Song; released in the USA in 1998.
1996 - Won critical appreciation for his turn as the psychopathic Begbie in Danny Boyle s acclaimed film Trainspotting.
1997 - Made third film with director Antonia Bird, Face, playing a gangster.
1997 - Starred in the Oscar-nominated sleeper hit The Full Monty, playing an unemployed steelworker who hits on the idea for a ragtag group to perform a strip show.
1998 - Co-starred with Jonny Lee Miller again in the period drama Plunkett and Macleane.
1999 - Awarded an OBE in the 1999 New Years honours list.
1999 - Co-starred with Emily Watson in Angela s Ashes.
1999 - Portrayed the villain to Pierce Brosnan s James Bond in The World Is Not Enough.
1999 - Re-teamed with Antonia Bird (when she replaced Milcho Manchevski as director) on Ravenous.
2000 - Had featured role in The Beach, helmed by Danny Boyle.
2001 - Ranked seventh in the 2001 Orange Film Survey of greatest British actors.
2002 - July 4 – Him and his wife Anastasia had a baby girl, Ava.
2003 - Cast as Jimmy in the action fature Once Upon a Time in the Midlands.
2004 - March – The second child for Anastasia and Robert was born! A little boy named Harvey who weigh 7 lbs. 5oz. and was born at the Glasgow’s Queen Mother Maternity Hospital.
2006 - Cast in Eragon a fantasy/adventure movie based on the novel of the same name.
2006 - Earned an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for Human Trafficking.
2006 - April – Robert’s third child, a son named Pearce Joseph.
2007 Co-starred in 28 Weeks Later, the sequel to Danny Boyle’s 2002 film 28 Days Later.
2007 - Appeared in stage productions at the Glasgow Arts Centre.
2007 - Merged his film company ‘Rain Dog’ into ’4way Pictures’, a partnership with Antonia Bird and Mark Cousins.
2007 -Originally cast as Alex Law in Shallow Grave but dropped out of project and was replaced by Ewen McGregor.
2007 - Professional stage debut as Oberon in A Midsummer Night s Dream.
2008 - Made films such as Summer, Stone of Destiny and I Know You Know. Plus the TV film 24: Redemption.
2009 - Starred in the TV films The Unloved, Zig Zag Love and the film The Tournament.
2009-20111 Began his work on the TV Series SGU Stargate Universe as Dr. Nicholas Rush.
2011 Signed up for the film California Solo to star as ex-rock star Lachlan MacAldonich. He also filmed the TV Series Once Upon a Time.
